From raw sample to thin-section, I can offer a wide range of slides sizes suitable for a variety of specimen types. The prices below do not include insurance and delivery costs, as this will vary according to each job. Please also see the notes below about the additional cost implications of sectioning problematic samples. I am VAT exempt.

I would be happy to answer any enquiries for bookings in the summer of 2011.

  • Raw soil and sediment samples are impregnated using a crystic resin cold-cure process, which takes 6 weeks. After this, an additional 4 weeks of production time is usually required, making the total turn-around time about 10 weeks.
  • Acetone replacement for wet soil and sediment samples is available, but adds an extra week to the impregnation process and adds an additional cost of £10.00 per sample.
  • Production time for archaeological materials and geological small format slides (58 x 42 x 3 mm, and 75 x 26 x 3 mm) will normally be around 4 weeks, dependent on the number of samples.
  • If customers wish to send their own impregnated samples for thin-section, in order to achieve the best result I will need to know the full details on the resin, chemicals, and the laboratory techniques used. If impregnation results are poor, I will need to re-impregnate the blocks or slices. As this will raise the original cost, I will re-issue a new quotation before proceeding to thin-section the samples.
  • Despite all of the laboratory methodologies available, occasionally there are samples that prove to be extremely difficult to thin-section. In this situation, I will need to contact the customer and discuss the problems and protocols available. A re-evaluation of the time and cost in supplies will need to be considered, and a new quotation will be issued. In unique situations, I may run trial samples before setting the costs involved.
  • I am available for thin-section consultancy. I would be happy to give advice on simple thin-sectioning matters by email, (julie@earthslides.com). For site visits to discuss more detailed thin-sectioning issues, my fee is £25.00 per hour, plus travel costs.
Please feel free to contact me for any questions about my services or prices offered.
